Silverfish Pest Control

Silverfish pest control focuses on identifying and managing the underlying conditions that allow these pests to survive and spread within a property. Unlike many insects, silverfish are attracted to damp, dark environments and can often go unnoticed until populations increase.

Our approach involves inspecting common problem areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, storage spaces, and concealed gaps where silverfish are likely to live. By understanding how and why they are present, we can apply the most suitable control strategy for each property.

Long-term pest control also involves reducing favourable conditions that support silverfish activity, helping to minimise the risk of recurring infestations in both residential and commercial buildings.

Silverfish Treatment In London

Silverfish treatment in London is carried out using targeted professional methods designed to reduce active infestations quickly and effectively. Once the level of activity has been assessed, treatment is applied to affected areas where silverfish are most likely to be present.

Each treatment is tailored to the severity of the issue and the layout of the property, ensuring the infestation is addressed thoroughly without unnecessary disruption. This allows for a more controlled and effective resolution of the problem.

Following treatment, advice is provided to help maintain results and reduce conditions that may encourage silverfish to return, supporting long-term pest management across London properties.

Where do silverfish live?

Silverfish are most commonly found in humid, moist areas such as bathrooms and like most pests, they hide their presence from humans. They have a preference for paper and damp clothing and often take up residence in garages. Despite the fact that they prefer damp, dark places, they can also be found in kitchens as they are attracted to carbohydrate food sources.

What do silverfish eat?

Silverfish prefer to feed on carbohydrates but are not overly fussy. They have been known to eat shampoo, glue and linens such as silk as they are attracted to a substance called polysaccharides that are present in these items.

Are silverfish a serious problem?

Silverfish are not known to transmit diseases to humans, but they can still cause issues within the home. In some cases, their presence may trigger allergies or irritation in sensitive individuals, particularly in areas where infestations are more established.

Another concern is that silverfish can sometimes attract other pests, such as carpet beetles, which can add to an already stressful pest situation. While they are not dangerous, their presence can indicate underlying moisture problems within a property that may need attention.

Silverfish are also known to damage personal belongings over time. They feed on materials containing starch or cellulose, which means books, paper files, wallpaper, and stored documents can all be affected. In larger numbers, this can lead to noticeable and costly damage if the infestation is not controlled early.

How Would You Get Rid of Silverfish in my London Property?

Signs of a silverfish infestation

  1. Spotting a live silverfish:
In general, most people spot a live silverfish in places such as their sink/bathtub before any other signs. It is only once they start further inspecting that they notice the damage caused by these pests. Seeing a single silverfish is not a sure sign that you have an infestation but it should certainly warrant further investigation.
  2. Marks and droppings:
You should keep an eye out for feeding marks as well as small pepper-like faeces and yellow stains, especially on wallpaper as they feed on the paste. As the faeces are extremely small, you could miss them so it’s recommended to be extra vigilant if you suspect an infestation.
  3. Shed skins:
Silverfish often shed their skin throughout their lifetime and this is another clue. The skins are very delicate and sometimes hard to see but again be vigilant and really inspect your surroundings.

How to prevent silverfish

Prevention is always the best course of action as it decreases the chances of silverfish residing in your home. There are a number of simple steps you can take to deter these pests:

1) Reduce humidity:
After you shower or bath, you should always reduce the humidity in your bathroom by using the extractor fan or even opening the window. This is because condensation caused by steam on the walls attracts silverfish and provides an ideal environment to breed in.

2) Declutter:
Clutter gives silverfish a chance to hide; they are very shy creatures and will do anything not to be spotted. By removing clutter, you will expose them to the human eye which they dislike. Regular vacuming in hidden places will also give them less opportunity to evade sight.

3) Food storage:
Keep all dry food in sealed containers as silverfish are highly attracted to the carbohydrates present in these types of foods.

4) Remove adhesive containing items:
Items that contain adhesive such as boxes are enticing for silverfish as they like to feed off of the glue. If they really aren’t needed, you could take them to the recycling centre which will also benefit the environment.

5) Seal off entry points:
The smallest hole could provide a silverfish the opportunity to enter your home. You should check your property for cracks/crevices and seal them using a material such as caulk.

6) Purchase a dehumidifier:
If you live in a moist climate, or your home seems to retain moisture in the air, you should consider buying a dehumidifier. These clever pieces of kit reduce air humidity by upto 60% which will certainly help to deter silverfish

How to get rid of silverfish

Once an infestation has taken hold, there are a number of things you can do to try to eliminate them from your home.

1) Sticky traps for monitoring activity

Sticky traps can be used to help identify areas of high silverfish activity within a property. These are typically placed in bathrooms, kitchens, and other damp environments to monitor movement and assess the severity of the infestation.

2) Professional targeted treatment

For effective results, professional pest control treatments are often required. These treatments are applied to key infestation areas where silverfish are active, including hidden spaces such as behind skirting boards, under appliances, and within structural gaps. This ensures the infestation is treated at the source rather than just on the surface.

3) Addressing the root conditions

Long-term control depends on reducing the conditions that attract silverfish, particularly excess moisture and undisturbed areas. Professional technicians can identify contributing factors within the property and provide guidance to help prevent recurring activity.

If the infestation persists or becomes widespread, professional intervention is the most reliable way to fully eliminate silverfish. At Pestcure Ltd, our technicians provide tailored treatment plans designed to deal with infestations effectively and prevent them from returning.

I’ve been speaking with Johnny and he has been so helpful in identifying insects in my room. Thankfully not a bed bug and he is helping me come up with ways to get rid of them! Highly recommend
Aaron went the extra mile and beyond to solve our issue, keeping us calm and enabling us to enjoy our holiday. A rat had entered and hidden inside our house two days before our trip away. Aaron taught us about rats as well as how to deal with them and explained our options clearly. He laid traps, doing exactly as he would do if he had the same situation in his own home. When the rat reappeared, Aaron returned and dealt with the issue completely, relieving us of the stress we had faced and freeing us to relax on our holiday. I highly recommend Pestcure Ltd and Aaron to anyone facing a pest problem.

Great proofing of my apartment following a persistent mouse issue. I feel super confident that the issue is now dealt with. Would have been 5 stars, but the company clearly needs more people in admin. Missed bookings, wrong invoices etc. were a worry (especially when I had paid £750 in advance)
