Mosquitoes were previously associated with tropical climates like that of Africa, but an increase in global warming has made their presence much more common in the UK.

There are over 30 types of native mosquitoes here in the UK and year on year, their numbers are increasing.

Why do mosquitoes bite more people than others?

Science is still ongoing as to why some people are plagued by bites but others escape unscathed. There are however, a number of theories that could explain this strange occurrence.

A major reason for this is thought to be our blood type. Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to people with the blood type “O” so if you are of this blood type, you could be at a disadvantage when it comes to being bitten.

Like lots of other pests, mosquitoes are drawn to the carbon dioxide that we exhale. The more a person exhales, the more likely they are to be bitten. A larger person is also at greater risk as they breathe out more Co2 in comparisin to a smaller framed person.

Mosquitos tend to surface between April and October if the weather conditions are favorable. Females can lay upto 200 eggs that are black and look like poppy seeds. They need stagnant water in order to breed and you may find eggs in guttering, at the side of ponds or in water features. Living by a lake or river could also draw mosquitoes near to your home.

The itchiness that follows a bite is the main reason people find them so uncomfortable. It is our body reacting to the insect’s saliva and naturally the reaction varies according to the individual.

If you are bitten, you should:

1) Clean the bite to destroy any germs that may be present using soap and water.

2) Once the wound is clean, check if a stinger has been left in the skin. If it has, gently try to remove it with sterile tweezers and clean with an alcohol wipe after.

3) Use a cold compress to bring down any swelling that is present.

4) Avoid scratching the affected area as you risk the bite becoming infected.
